Brigham Young University, commonly known as BYU, is a private, coeducational research university, owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is a Mormon Church, and it is located in Provo, the 3rd largest city in Utah, and the county seat of Utah County. Provo is also the principal city in the Provo-Orem Metropolitan Area, which has a population estimated at a number of more than 540 000 inhabitants, being the 2nd largest metropolitan area in the state, after Salt Lake City.
BYU traces its origins back in 1862, when Warren Dusenberry, started a school in Provo, in a building called Cluff Hall, situated in the northeast corner of 200 East and 200 North. In 1875, on October 16, the building was purchased by Brigham Young, the man after whom the university was later called and the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the reminded date remaining today as BYU's founding date.
Today, BYU is known as the oldest existing institution within the LDS Church Educational System, the largest religious university in the States, as well as the 2nd largest private university, by enrollment, in USA. About 98% of the 34 000 students which are attending BYU are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and 1/3 of the American students who are studying here, come from Utah.
The athletic teams at BYU are known as the BYU Cougars, which compete in various intercollegiate championships, such as the NCAA Division I FBS, the Mountain West Conference, as well as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, in different sports, including football, basketball and volleyball. The basketball team is ranked among the top 25 NCAA programs for all-time total victories, and the football team has won a total of 22 conference championships, since 1974.
